Jason Statham reveals the reason he doesn’t appear in superhero movies (Marvel, DC…) despite receiving lucrative offers
Jason Statham discusses his opinions on the superhero film genre and explains why he isn’t interested in participating.
After starring in the franchise’s most recent sequel, Expend4bles, Statham will next be seen in David Ayer’s forthcoming action film, The Beekeeper. It’s the most recent in a long string of jobs for Statham that include him taking down villains, but despite having starred in numerous films, he hasn’t yet taken on a significant part in a superhero film. Statham gave Variety an explanation for why he isn’t going after such kinds of movies, stating that he is simply far more drawn to conventional action movies.
Statham remarked, “I’m not really into costumes with tights and a cape.” “I enjoy classic 1980s films. People like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone served as inspiration for me. And even earlier than those three: Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, and Steve McQueen. I simply couldn’t envision any of those guys dressing up, donning masks, and moving around on wires.
This is not to suggest that Statham disapproves of the genre; rather, it’s just not his thing. The actor went on, “Music and film are similar. While some people enjoy heavy metal, others prefer country and western music. Something a little more anchored in action appeals to me. To be honest, I think that having a solid foundation is a nice addition to the wild world we live in.
Despite not being a part of the MCU, Statham has been a part of multiple other successful series. In addition to the Expendables series, he has appeared in other Fast & Furious movies, including Hobbs & Shaw, a spinoff he co-starred in with Dwayne Johnson. The actor recently played a significant part in Guy Ritchie’s spy comedy Operation Fortune: Rose de Guerre, as well as the gigantic shark sequel Meg 2: The Trench.
