Black Adam, the much-maligned DC Extended Universe movie, becomes a huge hit on Netflix after just moving there.

Black Adam has a comeback on Netflix a year after its film office failure, after the DC Extended Universe’s recent debut on the well-liked streaming service.

Black Adam, which debuted in theaters in October of last year, is ranked eighth on Netflix’s viewership chart, behind rival DCEU film Suicide Squad, which is ranked fifth, according to Screen Rant. After previously being available on Max and Apple TV, Black Adam made its Netflix debut on December 1st, joining a number of other DCEU titles that were added to the streaming platform.

The final DCEU film of 2022 was Black Adam, featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the title character, an ancient superhuman. Black Adam, co-produced by his Seven Bucks Productions label, about the titular character’s journey to free Kahndaq from a criminal organization that wanted to use an antiquated artifact to take over the country. Johnson expected great things from the film. The original plan for the Black Adam character was to play a significant role in the DCEU, inspiring a film franchise and hinting at potential future contacts with Superman. In the film’s post-credits scene, Henry Cavil made a brief reappearance as the “Last Son of Krypton.”

But Black Adam bombed at the international box office, taking in just $393 million compared to a possible expenditure of up to $260 million. This resulted in financial losses for DC Studios and seriously harmed any ambitions of a feature series. James Gunn and Peter Safran assumed co-CEO roles at DC, and Gunn and Johnson jointly announced in December of last year that the Black Adam series will not be continuing as part of the DCEU. According to later claims, Johnson’s alleged ego caused Black Adam to fail because several of his behind-the-scenes choices infuriated Warner Bros. execs.

Johnson has since thought back on the postponed Black Adam sequel, calling the decision to not move forward with a follow-up film “one of the biggest mysteries” in August. On his Hart to Heart podcast, Johnson said to co-star Kevin Hart of the Jumanji movie franchise, “Black Adam got caught in a vortex of new leadership.” “There were numerous shifts in the leadership. When a publicly listed firm experiences frequent leadership changes, it is inevitable that new individuals will be appointed who, in both their creative and financial capacities, will make judgments you may find disagreeable.

Black Adam, which was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, stars Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, and Johnson as former James Bond franchise members. This holiday season, the DCEU will come to an end with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. After that, Gunn and Safran’s reimagined DCU will begin to take shape with a new slate of films and television series titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
